Night of Museums invites to exhibition dedicated to poet Aleksandrs Čaks and electric tram

In the Night of Museums, everybody is invited to visit an express exhibition dedicated to Latvian poet Aleksandrs Čaks and his contemporary, the electric tram. Express exhibition “Čaks. Pilsēta. Tramvajs.” uses collages to show the most significant events in the poet’s life, in combination with Riga’s historic views and tram-related motives. The exhibition is presented at the memorial flat – museum of Aleksandrs Čaks in Rīga, at Lāčplēša Street 48 – 8. The exhibition is organised by RP SIA “Rīgas satiksme” in cooperation with poet’s memorial flat-museum.

With express exhibition “Čaks. City. Tram.”, “Rīgas satiksme” starts to participate in cultural historic projects. Riga’s electric tram and A. Čaks are born at the same time. The poet was born in Riga on October 27, 1901, but the electric tram was launched just three months later – on July 11. The tram is one of the leading motives in the poetry of A. Čaks. It brings the poet through all the significant events of his life.

At the exhibition, collages feature six key episodes in the life of A. Čaks. These are his childhood, when he used trams without paying fare to save money for ice-cream, his youth and the publication of the first selections of poems, visiting his uncle’s homestead “Pellādas”, marriage with Anna Ērika Elizabete Bērziņa, as well the period of the Soviet occupation, when had to meet with the requirements of the authorities. A collage of the tram carrying the poet into the eternity concludes the exhibition.

The similarities between the launch of electric tram in Riga and the time of birth of A. Čaks echoes with the theme of this year’s Night of Museums (“Cradle”) and its leading motive (“Birth”).

We remind that additional public transport runs will be organised in the Night of Museums of May 19/20 for passengers’ comfort.
